PRESS RELEASE The Government of Liberia has announced a reduction in transportation fares in the Republic of Liberia effective Thursday, January 15, 2015. The new prices reflect the reduction in retail prices of petroleum products, especially gasoline and diesel fuel. In recent months, there has been a net decrease of 22% in the previous prices of petroleum products in Liberia. This decision was issued in a join communication signed by the Minister of Commerce & Industry and the Minister of Transport. The communication also cautioned those drivers who refuse to adhere to the price reduction that they will be penalized as follows: 1. First offense, US$100.00 for taxi, US$200.00 for buses and Pickups. 2. Second offense, US$ 200.00 for Taxi and US$400.00 for Buses and Pickups. 3. Third offense, two years suspension of operator’s Driver License. According to the Ministry of Transport Press Release issued in Monrovia today, commuters and the public are advised to report any violators to the Ministry of Transport or to the nearest police station. The new fares are being circulated to the public and will be published daily newspapers. The public is advised to call: 0886-668-717/0886-557-902. Any commercial driver overcharging passengers outside of the government approved fares will be penalized accordingly. Commuters and the public are advised to report any violator(s) to the Ministry of Transport or the nearest police station. The cooperation of the public is solicited. Penalty for Violators: 1. First offense: US$100.00 for Taxi and US$200.00 for TP/TB to be paid into the ventral revenue account at the Central Bank of Liberia within twenty four (24) hours of the violation. 2. Second offense: US$200.00 for Taxi and US$400.00 for TP/TB to be paid into the Central Revenue account at the Central Bank of Liberia within twenty four (24) hours of the violation. 3. Third offense: Two years suspension of operator’s Driver’s License. THESE FARES ARE SUBJECT TO ADJUSTMENT CONSISTENT WITH ADJUSTMENT IN THE PRICE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS ON THE LOCAL MARKET.
