PRESS RELEASE Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft would like to make area residents aware of a reported online scam. The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted by an area resident who indicated that she was contacted by a person known to her on Facebook. The individual indicated that a conversation was held via Facebook through private messenger. The individual indicated that during the course of conversation they were told that there are Federal Government Grant Programs through the World Bank in which they may qualify to receive a grant. During the course of the conversation the resident was encouraged by the other person, who represented themselves as being a United States Grant Agent, to apply for an online grant and instructed that money would be delivered via the UPS Company. The resident was also asked to send a specific amount of money to receive the grant proceeds. The resident contacted the known acquaintance by telephone and discovered that the acquaintance’s Facebook Account had in fact been compromised. Sheriff Craft would like to remind residents to be cautious when contacted online regarding any type of financial transactions. If you are contacted via social media by an acquaintance who is soliciting money please attempt to confirm by other means that you are in fact communicating with that person. Internet Crimes are becoming more prevalent within our society and additional measures to ensure privacy need to be taken by citizens.
