PRESS RELEASE WORLD TOURISM DAY – 27th SEPTEMBER 2014 The Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism together with the Lobatse Community will commemorate the national event of the World Tourism Day at the Lobatse Town Park on the 25th September 2014 under the theme: “Tourism and Community Development”. The World Tourism Day is part of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) calendar of events and is observed worldwide by its members on September 27. Its main objective is to create awareness on tourism and the value that it creates among communities and the economy. It is intended to educate local communities on the tourism opportunities that exist and could consider embarking on, in order to create employment, uplift the image of their localities and to realise economic gains. In line with the objective, Lobatse has been selected to host the event recognising its tourism potential due to the rich historical and cultural heritage resources. It is hoped that the event will ignite interest in Lobatse and in future attract both international and domestic tourists to the town. The history of Lobatse shows the important role the community played during the liberation struggle of some of the Southern African States as well as being the first sit of capital amongst other things. The event will be preceded by a cultural night on the 24th September 2014. This year’s theme highlights the significant role the community plays in pursuit of sustainable tourism development. It calls for an appreciation of tourism and what it can contribute to local communities and the need to involve the community in development planning. In addition, communities have an obligation to preserve and protect resources around them in order to derive socio-economic benefits from them. The event will be commemorated around the country in Tsabong (23/09), Ncojane and Kasane (24/09), Maun (25/09), Francistown (26/09) and Mmadinare (27/09). Activities put in place to celebrate the day will range from workshops, presentations to stakeholders, cultural events, visits to monuments, etc.
