PRESS RELEASE: Waste Control runs summer food drive to relieve community hunger With the theme, “Hunger doesn’t take a vacation,” local Waste Control management and staff are asking their customers to put out a bag of food with the garbage and recycle bins three weeks this summer. During the second weeks of July, August, and September, Waste Control managers will follow the collection trucks on their Longview and Kelso routes and pick up any bags of food that people leave next to their bins. “We are hoping this will make a difference,” said Rolly Ensign of Waste Control. “We wanted to find a way to help our community and thought this was something that we all could do.” CAP’s Help Warehouse will receive the collected food and distribute it to Longview and Kelso food banks. “Summer and early fall are our leanest months,” said Lois Shelton, Help Warehouse program manager. “There are a number of food drives happening during the rest of the year, by schools and businesses and churches, but summer gets quiet even though the need for food does not go away.” Shelton said that preferred items are dry and canned goods, nonperishable food, infant formula, but also toiletries such as toothpaste, toilet paper, and diapers. Help Warehouse cannot distribute home-canned goods, fresh meat, or bulk foods in plastic bags. Ensign said that people are also welcome to drop off food at Waste Control or at Help Warehouse in the CAP building. The effort is being supported by the radio stations of BiCoastal Media and the City of Longview, who printed a reminder on the bills they send out to residents. Help Warehouse, a program of Lower Columbia CAP, has been the food collection and distribution center for Cowlitz and Wahkiakum food banks since 1982. Warehouse staff and volunteers distribute 1.7 million pounds of food in this area each year. For more information, call Waste Control at 360-425-4302, or CAP at 360-425-3430 ext 283. Save these dates! July 8-12 August 12-16 September 9-13 Put out a bag of food with your waste and recycle bins to help feed the hungry in our community and Waste Control will deliver to Help Warehouse.
