PRESS REPUBLICAN MORIAH — The condition of an 83-year-old deer hunter who was shot in the woods off Bartlett Pond Road here was upgraded to stable on Wednesday. Joseph R. Rodriguez of Mineville was shot in the lower body with a 12-gauge slug by another hunter around 4 p.m. Monday. His condition had been critical at University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, but on Wednesday afternoon it was upgraded to stable. Rodriguez underwent surgery Tuesday and was scheduled for a second surgery Wednesday. The incident remains under investigation, State Police said, and charges may be filed against the hunter who shot Rodriguez. His name won’t be released until later in the investigation, police said. Both men were hunting separately in Moriah’s Mineville hamlet when the other hunter fired and hit Rodriguez. The injured man is a former Moriah town councilor
