PRESS STATEMENT ON WATER SHORTAGE IN VOI AND ENVIRONS To citizens of Taita Taveta County. How it began Bulk Water Company maintains Mzima pipeline. Occasionally they carry out scheduled maintenance on the pipeline. The agreement is that they must give notice to the counties along the pipeline before they do so. On Monday 6th October 2014 they issued a notice of intention to carry out repairs on the pipeline for 3 days commencing Thursday 9th October through Saturday 11th October. We notified our citizens through the media on Wednesday 8th October and advised them to store water. The Repairs. Water supply was cut off on Thursday 9th October and repairs commenced and completed as scheduled on Saturday 11th October. Water was released on Saturday evening. The Problem. Immediately water was released there was a pipe burst 5km from Mzima source. This was unexpected and necessitated that materials for repair be brought from Mombasa. This was done by Sunday evening. Due to massive corrosion and weak pipeline (note the pipeline is 50 years old) repairs required delicate approach. We expected it to take 24 hours but it took 40 hours. Current Situation. The repairs are now complete and water is flowing in the pipeline. Normal pressures are expected to build up overnight of Tuesday 14th October and normalcy to be re-established by Wednesday morning. Future Repairs We have agreed with Bulk Water Co. that future shutdowns will be worked out better and jointly with the County Government. Future Plans on Mzima. We are pursuing 2 options for getting additional water from Mzima Pipeline. 1. A Joint venture Mzima 2 pipeline Project with the counties of Kwale,Kilifi and Mombasa. This project is being spearheaded by Coast water. 2. Our own independent Pipeline to cover Taita Taveta County from Mzima,Kishsushe,Mbololo,Mwatate and a loops to Mwakitau,Sagalla,Kasigau. We will choose the option that gives us best benefit as our major drive is Ranching and Agriculture. We expect to make firm decisions by the end of this year and will keep citizens notified. I wish to thank you all for your patience and understanding during these difficult days. God Bless Taita Taveta Hon.(Engr).Joseph Mbogho County Executive Committee Member WATER AND IRRIGATION COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF TAITA TAVETA 14th October 2014
