PRESS SUMMARIES-21 June 2013 Deal sealed for gas power plant General Electric (GE) and symbion power Tanzania have signed a cooperation agreement for the development of a 400MW gas-fired power plant in Mtwara to boost electricity generation in the country. The project is expected to commence early next year. The signing ceremony was held in dare s Salaam yesterday between GE’s Vice-Chairman Mr. John Rice and Symbion Power Tanzania’s General Manager, Dr. Don Brindle and witnessed by the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof. Sospeter Muhongo. The Project will be located in the gas-rich region of Mtwara. Tanzania is growing rapidly and to ensure we have an enabling environment that supports sustainable economic growth, we need to overcome inhibiting challenges such as interrupted power supply. This project will just do that the GE Vice-Chair said. It will also include a transmission line from Mtwara to Songea where it will be connected to the national grid. The signing of this agreement marks a key milestone that will change the face of Tanzania’s energy Sector. Natural gas now account for about 22 per cent of the world’s energy consumption and the demand is growing. (The Daily News, the Guardian,21 June 2013) Coming to Tanzania George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush to host summit on the role of African first ladies in promoting women empowerment parallel with Obama visit. Nine first ladies expected to attend For the first time Tanzania will host the First African Ladies’ summit, to be attended by US first Lady Michele Obama and some former first ladies from the US and Britain. The summit, scheduled to take place in Dar es Salaam from July 2 to 3, is being applauded by a cross-section of Tanzanian women who see it as a special opportunity to share progressive ideas and an indication of Tanzania’s acceptability at the international level. The summit, which is set to bring together at least eight wives of African Heads of State, whose theme is: Investing in Women, Strengthening Africa. It has been established that among other things, the Summit will focus on the important role that First Ladies play in promoting women’s education, health and economic empowerment. The former US president, Mr. George W. Bush and his wife Laura, are expected to deliver keynote speeches at the Summit. Issues to be presented and discussed include empowering women entrepreneurs through training and technology, providing opportunities and improving agricultural outcomes for female farmers and a life-saving collaboration to combat cervical and breast cancer. The Executive Director of Tanzania Gender Networking Programme said the Summit would provide a good opportunity for Tanzanian women to discuss various issues including the accountability in the First Ladies Institutions and will bring together people with difference skills and outlook, will enable Tanzanian to know where they are and where they are heading” she said.
