PRETORIA. The High Commissioner writes: I am just back from a hectic 24 hours at the British High Commission in Pretoria. In part I was attending a meeting with some diplomatic colleagues about how we can work together to further our professional development. My colleagues seem to be a pretty dynamic bunch, and it will be good to explore with them new and different ways of doing things. It was also good to touch base with a variety of other colleagues based at the BHC. I am amazed on such occasions about how conversations can generate new ideas in unexpected ways. It is the same when I return to HQ in London. On these trips the temptation is to try to see lots of people in a limited time, but you can over-programme yourself. You need time to go beyond the obvious business. It is like conferences and big business meetings. Often these are most valuable for the discussions in the margins. When have you had conversations that have proved unexpectedly useful?
