PREVIEWING 14TH FEBUARY 2015 POLLS: Our Choice of Senator (2) According to projection(s) of experts of comparative political settings and historians of Nigeria political system, 2015 to 2019 senate will be unlike any in the annals of the countrys political evolution. The senate, according to them, will no longer be dominated by one single party like the setting between 1999 to 2011. Pundits pillared their assumptions on the sudden expansion of the political space by merger of fractious opposition clusters to one gigantic opposition front called All Progressives Congress (APC).Emergence of APC, a novel development in the countrys political history, changed much in terms of control of governments at the state and local government levels. For the first time, since inception of this democracy in 1999, opposition party is controlling over a dozen states and running neck-to-neck in the Green and Red Chambers. Sequel to that, the 2015-2019 senate will be a shrine of almost equal representatives between APC and PDP. Consequently, the prestige and quality of Senators will improve. A vote of any Senator or his position on any matter, will carry much weight- and consequences big. A single Senator can set things apart and halt implementation of some policies or passage of any law. Little wonder most senatorial districts are forwarding their first eleven for serious business of lawmaking and oversight functions. Therefore, a would be Senator must understand these nuances and know how to play the game to advance and protect the interest of his constituency and that of the nation. He or she must be versatile in the act of lobbying and forging alliances with colleagues who share the same interest in matters on the floor or at the committee level. Senators must have some degree of connections outside the nation, this is to enable him or her compliment governments effort in critical areas like: combating poverty; training of farmers on new farming techniques ; five child killer diseases; and fighting malaria - among others. And now, looking at the two obvious options before us i.e. Dr. Ishaku Mabushi Shekarau of APC and Chief Danjuma Tella Laah of PDP, who can breast up to this challenges? Our scaling of who to be must not and shouldnt be anchored on party affiliation but capabilities of these candidates. Who can stand on the floor and talk for us? Who between Shekarau and Laah will read a document at the committee level and understand where our interest is? Who has international connection(s) and can fly abroad and brief the world on our situation? NOTE. See you tomorrow for the season three.
