PRISON BUS CRASHES NEAR MIDLAND/ODESSA. FROM THE TDCJ: January 14, 2014 On Wednesday, January 14th, at approximately 7:30 am, a transport bus traveling from the Middleton Unit in Abilene to the Sanchez Unit in El Paso was involved in an accident. Preliminary information is the vehicle left the roadway near mile marker 100 on Interstate 20 and collided with a train. 2 correctional officers and 8 offenders have died from injuries sustained in the accident. 1 staff member and 4 offenders have been transported to the Medical Center in Odessa and are receiving medical treatment. An investigation into the accident is ongoing. “It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers,” said Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. We will release more information as it becomes available.
