***PROFANITY DISCLAIMER*** Is this a somewhat sneaky way to effect societal change? Perhaps. But what are we really arguing about here? i know that not everyone pays the fullest attention in history class growing up, but the long and the short of our government’s relationship with the Native Americans is this: we murdered the ever loving shit out of most of them. That horrendous history doesn’t mean you personally have to give ten bucks to every Native American you see now and let them kick you in the balls, it just means we should probably not openly mock them and their culture. Are there people among the Native American population that aren’t offended by the team name? Probably. But it’s clear as day that there are many, many who are. And again, no one from the government has said you can’t say that word, or can’t even name your team as such. They’ve just said that no one can hold the trademark on a racial slur. And you have to ask yourself who in their right mind would actually argue against that? Who in their right mind would tell you that if a team owner wanted to call their team the “Dallas N*ggers” that would be just totally fine? Assholes. That’s who. Assholes who think that words have no impact or meaning unless they come out of a liberal’s mouth about something they have a feeling of misguided tradition about. In my day to day life I try not to embrace racial epithets, because as much as conservatives love to make fun of liberals for being “offended” for society, the reason that happens is that those words are the first and most powerful weapon in a racist’s arsenal for keeping their racist ways in vogue. No, not every Redskins fan is a racist, but that doesn’t make the team name any less so.
