In a physical workout, warming up/stretching and strength training are both an important part of staying in shape, though each has a slightly different function. A warm-up on your instrument can literally help to get the body, muscles and instrument warm and ready to work, however daily exercises such as scales, arpeggios, tone, vibrato, and articulation exercises help to build long lasting skill, awareness and reliability. When practicing, for optimal training and maximum efficiency of effort, it is important to make the conscious distinction between the two. Warming up for a practice session gets you prepared to play for that day, whereas daily exercises get you prepared to play for a lifetime.
