PROGRESS! The tragic killing of #EricGarner, #MikeBrown, #TamirRice and so many others has shined a spotlight on the nationwide crisis of violent policing. But just how many people are killed by police each year? The answer is no one knows because the federal government isnt keeping track of this data. But now, Attorney General Eric Holder is saying keeping track is the first step toward upholding the rights of citizens. According to A.G. Holder: This would represent a common-sense step that would begin to address serious concerns about police officer safety, as well as the need to safeguard civil liberties, Holder continued. The troubling reality is that we lack the ability right now to comprehensively track the number of incidents of either uses of force directed at police officers or uses of force by police. More than 200,000 ColorOfChange members raised their voices demanding comprehensive nationwide policing reform to end the crisis of violent policing, including a streamlined, publicly-accessible database of police killings. Your voices are being heard! But now is not the time to sit silent. If you havent demanded an end to the crisis of violent policing heres your chance while the momentum is growing.
