PROJECT BLUE LIGHT As part of your holiday decorations, the Winston/Salem/Forsyth County Fraternal Order of Police asks that you keep in mind Project Blue Light, the tradition of placing a blue bulb on a holiday display in one of their windows to show their support for law enforcement. The tradition began in 1988 in Philadelphia, when a woman used such a light to honor her son-in-law, an officer who had been killed in the line of duty, and grew from there. The light honors all law enforcement workers, not just the police. “During this holiday season we wish to continue our annual Holiday Honor with Project Blue Light and once again ask you to please join in the honor,” Barry Westmoreland, the former president of the local Fraternal Order of Police, wrote in an email to SAM. “Project Blue Light participation simply involves the placing a single Christmas candle in one of your windows, with the candle to be lit by a single blue bulb. “The purpose of this blue light is three-fold. First, it serves as a memorial to all of the men and women of Law Enforcement who have died or have been disabled in the line of duty. “Secondly, the blue light is in honor of those who continue to serve within the profession of Law Enforcement. Despite the threats of harm and the risk of persecution, they continue to report for duty daily. “Thirdly, the blue lights are in appreciation of the Officers who will be protecting our families, homes, schools and businesses during the holidays. While most of us will enjoy the holidays with our families and friends, Officers remain on duty to throughout the entire season. “The placing of your single blue light candle is a simple process, but it says a lot. It says ‘Thank You’. Please join us in the message.” Print Posted in Ask sam on Thursday, December 11, 2014 6:00 am.
