PROJECT NEMO - IMPROVING WATER QUALITY IN HERBERT & BURDEKIN CATCHMENTS Today, with Dale Last, LNP Candidate for Burdekin, I announced that the Great Barrier Reef will benefit from a $1.7 million investment by the Newman LNP Government to continue efforts to improve water quality flowing from the Burdekin and Herbert catchments.. The LNP Government is committed to addressing bread and butter environmental issues to our waterways in North Queensland are performing at the highest standards now and into the future. It taps the know-how of local sugar productivity organisations and natural resource management groups to show sugarcane growers farm practices that deliver economic and environmental benefits. This project will not only contribute to the improvement of water quality leaving properties and entering the reef, but it will also help support on-farm productivity gains through improved farm management practices. It is yet another example of the Newman LNP Government working to protect and manage the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. This funding will also help the LNP meet our promise to Queenslanders to support agriculture and tourism to deliver economic benefits and create jobs across the state. The Newman LNP Government is investing $35 million a year towards reef water quality improvements, with efforts starting to pay off. The Nitrogen Efficiency Management On-farm project (Project NEMO) will help to reduce nutrients running off agricultural systems—especially from the sugarcane industry—to the reef, which was highlighted as a critical need under the Reef Plan 2013. Further information about the Nitrogen Efficiency Management Project is available online at: nqdrytropics.au/.
