PROJECT RURAL WOMEN EMPOWERMENT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT PROBLEM YOU ARE SOLVING My name is Adisa Kabiru Adeniyi, a 300 level student of Economics, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. My proposed project is rural woman empowerment programme through financial literacy, mentorship match, skill acquisition, and entrepreneurship development. The support through this project would go a long way in the transforming the economic and social lives of our rural poor women who are often marginalized and lack access to means of livelihood. This project if implemented will provide job opportunities for the teeming population especially the rural women. WHY THIS IS A PROBLEM AND HOW YOU INTEND TO SOLVE IT? Many women in developing countries, especially those with little or no education, wallow in abject poverty. These categories of women are located majorly in various rural communities. They have to depend on their male counterpart to meet virtually all their needs. This place them at the mercy of the male folks who most time take advantage of them, exploit them, use and reduce them to second class citizen. This is so because many of these women lack entrepreneurship idea that can make them financially independent; hence the need for entrepreneurship awareness campaign among them. To do this, I intend to organize women in a particular location into self help small group through which they will be trained, attach to a mentor, and financially empowered through our tested entrepreneurship development programme. Our empowerment model is similar to that of KIVA in which fund will be provided in form of loan to the members of the self help group, and the beneficiaries business execution monitored through the group mentor. WHY AUDIENCE SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM? The world over is still grappling with the problem of human trafficking in which women are said to be major victims, especially in the third world. At the root of this phenomenon is the problem of women financial insecurity. If women in the third world are financially empowered, the problem will be drastically reduced. Two, women are the ones that mostly feel the heat of the financial crisis in the family; especially where the man is the only source of family income. Empowering women financially will prepare them to be true burden bearers to their counterpart and safeguard the whole family from an unprepared financial crisis. dellchallenge.org/projects/rural-women-empowerment
