These were hunted to extinction even before the passenger pigeon. The fact that every fresh water sea horse would surface if an apple was offered, spelled the doom of the species in fresh water. Sadly, the majority of these steeds were made into mock turtle soup. Some of our ancestors, though, had imagined a better use for these magnificent creatures even before the realization of scuba gear. The species survived only in brine conditions and in a stunted form as sea-monkeys. The re-introduction of Artemia nyos to West Point Lake and their subsequent growth to prior proportions will result in at least two benefits: 1) We will realize our far-sighted predecessors dream of a new equestrian sport and 2) Lake levels will need to be kept at optimal conditions for these rare creatures.
