Berger With bands like Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy, Christian Death, and Death In June receiving regular coverage in Propaganda, the ‘zine certainly earned its gothic street creds. But there was more to it than just the music, which was covered in a number of other periodicals during the ‘80s and ‘90s. There were also the models and club-goers in their Christo-Santanic, necromantic and vampiric makeup and attire. Looking as though they’d stepped out of the myriad horror films and novels which they so adored and emulated, they were only too happy to pose for me in all their undead beauty and funereal fineries. And from the relatively small groups who congregated at clubs like New York’s Danceteria and L.A.’s Scream in the mid-80s, their numbers seemed to skyrocket by the early ‘90s with virtually every city in America boasting a goth scene. As Propaganda’s growth accelerated and fan mail poured in from all over the world, I found myself on a hilltop one night in 1992 from which I could see the entire Los Angeles Basin. All alone with my thoughts, I imagined how many of the automobiles and dwellings whose lights flickered in the distance were inhabited by Propaganda readers, and it occurred to me that they were legion. They called it the “Gothic Bible,” and for a moment I was reminded of the Gospel of St. Matthew (Chapter 4, verses 8-11) where Jesus and Satan are standing on a mountain peak, and the Evil One offers him all the kingdoms of the earth if the Son of Man would bow down and worship him. Jesus rebukes him and the Devil departs. I received no such offer, but I did embrace the prospect of a mass circulation, internationally renowned publication dedicated to darkness and decadence. And beyond all expectations it came to pass, with the magazine achieving tremendous success in the years that followed. But with the new millennium barely begun, I had finally reached the point of burnout and bankruptcy after twenty years at the helm of the world’s preeminent gothic chronicle. When I started work on the first issue in 1982 I had no idea of the great heights and abject depths that this journey would inevitably entail, or that it would read like the script of a medieval morality play. Even the most visionary Gospel writer or gothic novelist would have found it challenging to conceive a tale of temptation more enthralling and profound than the rise and fall of Propaganda. Sic transit gloria (Latin: Glory is fleeting). PROPAGANDA BACK-ISSUES FOR SALE: Offered in this post are Propaganda back-issues from 1985 to 1998.
