PROPAGANDA: FIRST, FINAL AND FOREVER By Fred H. Berger, Propaganda Publisher (PROPAGANDA BACK-ISSUE SALE: See info. below this article. Click on pics to see magazine listings.) Friends, fiends and fanged ones, I am hereby offering for sale virtually the entire remaining stock of Propaganda back-issues. The first two hardcore punk issues are sold-out, although an incomplete selection of our world-famous goth and industrial issues is still available, as are the last three issues which were more fetish, queer and heroine chic oriented. Looking at the covers of the first and final issues (#1, Winter 1982 and #27, Winter 2002), it strikes me just how much the magazine evolved in the two decades of its history-making existence. As it grew, the quality of each issue steadily increased, from a 28-page, 5.5 x 8.5” black & white Xeroxed ‘zine to a 100-page, 8.5 x 11” full-color printed periodical. Likewise, the print-runs gradually increased, from a mere 300 copies to 22,000 copies – a multiple of 73x over twenty years. That’s no small achievement for a fringe subculture publication on a shoe-string budget which by dint of passion and perseverance attained international renown as the quintessential postpunk lifestyle magazine. Moreover, there were three Propaganda Video-zines which featured content similar to the print publication, of which approximately 20,000 copies were sold – as well as calendar and T-shirt merchandising, and an extensive and heavily trafficked website which wasn’t terminated until 2005. No multi-media enterprise ever chronicled, defined, influenced and integrated the goth, industrial and fetish scenes as Propaganda had done, and by virtue of that accomplishment it lives on via this Facebook fan page and the work currently underway to produce a book of Propaganda photos.
