PROPOSED CHILD’S RIGHTS LAW TO PROTECT FUTURE LEADERS The proposed child’s right law being considered by the Ogun State House of Assembly will ensure that the Nigerian child is protected from any form of abuse as well as giving her due recognition in policies and decision-making process that affect her life. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, stated this while declaring open a Stakeholders’ Forum on the House bill No28/0G/2013 titled “A bill for a law to provide for the protection, enforcement and advancement of the rights and welfare of the child in Ogun State and other matters incidental thereto or connected there with” Rt. Hon. Adekunbi said that the bill when passed would give opportunity to children to live a better life, assist them in aspiring to the highest level in life which in the long run benefit them and the society at large, adding that the children are entitled to be carried along on issues that affect them as they grow and are conscious of their roles in decision-making. “One of the hallmarks of democracy is that citizens have the rights to be part of the decisions that affect their lives, we are encouraging a system of governance and law making that reflects the voices, wishes , interests and concerns of the entire population”, the Speaker said. Earlier, the Chairperson of the Committee on Women Affairs and Social development, Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Anifowose , stated that the forum was organised to ensure that the rights of children were secured and adequately protected, as they remain future leaders. Contributing, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu, submitted that the provisions contained in the law were in line with the State Criminal codes, stating that inputs from parents were essential in ensuring proper up-bringing of the child.. The Stakeholders forum was attended by the relevant non-governmental organizations in Child care matters, officials from the Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Speaker of Children’s Parliaments, Miss Jayeola Oluwaseun, as well as representatives of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
