PROTECT ONE ANOTHER - Francis Memories of the Man, the Pastor, the Shepherd, the Pope, the Living Saint . . . of Fancisco . . . will definitely keep on lingering in our hearts, our minds and our souls. Stories of personal encounters, experiences and anecdotes will continue to flood the social networks. But I hope and pray that very soon, all of our beautiful memories of him will be translated into concrete actions. Let us mark the hard hitting statements he made during his homilies and messages. We can quote a lot . . . but for me the strongest one was his word of “habilin” . . . “panabilin” during his farewell mass at the Qurino Grandstand, “PROTECT ONE ANOTHER”. Let us take his words seriously, protect especially the sector closest to his heart, the POOR. We all need protection, but the poor need it most. We heard him tell us corruption hurt the poor most. We have all the resources in our country. We are poor not because we don’t have the money. In fact, we should have a lot. No matter how simple we might call the preparation for hosting the Pope’s visit, I’m sure we spent quite an amount. I strongly believe we have all the ingredients to be able to eradicate poverty in our country. What should we do? Among many others . . . 1. Politicians and government officials and workers should stop pocketing peoples’ money. Please stop exploiting the poor during elections and then forget them once in office. How can you afford to over celebrate life using peoples’ money? 2. The Clergy and Church organization should lead the way. Let us all be Francis in terms of lifestyle and pastoral administration. Live the spirit of poverty. 3. Aside from offering the sacraments, the Church should also offer life coaching sessions to the poor. They need to be assisted to get out of the culture of vulnerability so that they will no longer be prone to exploitation by the rich and politicians. 4. Those among us who have been endowed more than others, even if we got it all through honest efforts, should not just enjoy spending our purses by ourselves, let us open opportunities for the poor. 5. Everybody should cooperate in these efforts. Let us bring back order and discipline in our streets. Let us protect the environment. Let us love our country. Let us be passionate in doing all these not only during fiestas, but especially during the most ordinary moments of our national life. 6. Finally, let all our prayers and acts of worship be sincere. LET US BE MERCIFUL AND COMPASSIONATE WITH ONE ANOTHER. We should protect one another because WE ARE ALL GOD’S CHILDREN. We belong to one family, the Family of God.
