PROTECT ... The SKEENA RIVER Estuary, for our Wild Chinook Salmon, that includes Lelu Island ( the proposed LNG site for Petronas Co. ) Our Declaration: The health and abundance of wild salmon depend on intact fresh and saltwater habitats. The proposed Petronas Pacific NorthWest LNG development on Lelu Island, on the estuary of the Skeena River, would require massive dredging of areas that have been identified as critical to the health and abundance of Skeena salmon. A study by the federal government in 1973, as well as recent science, confirms that altering or destroying these habitats will significantly damage the abundance and health of Skeena salmon. This site was selected for industrial development without consultation with First Nations and Skeena communities. We, the undersigned, share a deep and abiding interest in the continued health and abundance of wild Skeena salmon. Therefore, we declare the proposed Pacific NorthWest LNG project cannot proceed. ~~~ Watch the video to learn what is at stake.!!! vimeo/108502889#at=0 What’s at Stake? Lelu Island and Ridley Island near Prince Rupert are both being considered as locations for LNG terminals. These islands are adjacent to the most important critical juvenile salmon habitat in the entire Skeena watershed. The Skeena Estuary contains the second largest intact eel grass bed in the province. Eel grass is where all the baby salmon hang out while their bodies adjust to the salt water, the tidal action and stay safe from predators they havent encountered in the rivers - its also the time we lose most of our salmon because they dont survive the change in water and/or habitat. This habitat is critical to the survival of salmon and steelhead smolts as a safe haven. We dont think the Skeena Estuary is the place for the biggest industrial projects in BC. - See more at: skeenawatershed/projects/detail/lng_in_the_skeena_watershed_think_again#sthash.FDbd4L5f.dpuf The Skeena River Estuary provides some of the most critical salmon habitat in the Skeena River Watershed. Each year over 279 million PACIFIC SALMON ( five species ) utilize the Skeena River Estuary. This area is under industrial threat by various large scale projects. The Non-Profit, SkeenaWild produced this video to share information with the public and prompt these corporate giant to reconsider construction activities. This is NOT the time to give up on our pristine coast! Used by over 279 million salmon each year, the Skeena River Estuary is the Heart of the Skeena. Large scale industrial projects threaten to destroy this critical habitat. SkeenaWild aims to inform the public of critical facts through this production. For those of you who havent yet-watch it, draw your own conclusions, share it and sign the declaration at: Sign the Petition here: savelelu.ca/ Please support SkeenaWild by looking at more of their videos vimeo/user8771951 Visit their website: https://skeenawild.org/ This is the biggest threat to our Pristine Coast, we need to make it clear to Premier Christy Clark that any LNG projects is NOT ACCEPTABLE and it violates our Coast Salish Peoples rights to a clean environment to gather their food from the sea. Liquefying natural gas requires tremendous amounts of energy, which BC Hydro is not currently able to supply. Due to this lack of energy the liquefaction process will most likely be powered by burning natural gas. Pollution from just one of these terminals would double the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire province; there are over 10 terminals currently being proposed. These polluting emissions could have impacts as severe as acid rain, but will definitely help cook the planet. You read that right, its 2013 and were worried about acid rain. FIVE! of these projects will pollute more than the Albertas DIRTY Tar-Sands!! Imagine what these emissions will do to the families that live in the communities? I hope we all can meet and organize a big PROTEST outside of PETRONIS office in Vancouver. Petronas office located at Oceanic Plaza, Suite 1900 - 1066 West Hastings Street Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Unceded Coast Salish Territories). Please feel free to go there and raise awareness of this planned LNG plant. It will be located on the proposed Petronas Pacific NorthWest LNG development on Lelu Island, on the estuary of the Skeena River, it will require massive dredging of areas that have been identified as critical to the health and abundance of Skeena salmon. Thank you kindly for sticking up for our WILD salmon and our Pristine Coast lets keep oil tanker traffic and LNG plants out of BC.
