PROTESTERS STONE NORTHERN GOVERNORS IN RIVERS STATE......Northern governors who are in Rivers State on a solidarity visit to embattled Governor Rotimi Amaechi have finally been secured at the Government House; hours after protesters stopped them from leaving the airport on their arrival. Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State and Babangida Aliyu of Niger State had landed at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, but met the presence of angry youth numbering an estimated 2000. All remained holed up at the airport, in the company of their host – Amaechi, until reinforced police security team came to escort them to the Government House. About 2000 young men were at the Port Harcourt Airport, Omagwa to prevent four governors from visiting Rotimi Amaechi. 16/7/2013. However, the motorcade met a hailstone of bricks, water bottles and sticks as the protesters pelted the cars. The VIPs got to the Government House safe, without any major incident, and are now holding a closed-door meeting with Amaechi. The protesters are said to be members of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) a group said to be loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike and against Amaechi. The youths, armed with machetes, iron bars, sticks and bottles, also carried placards with various inscriptions such as: ‘Amaechi must go’, ‘Amaechi is a psycho’, ‘Northern governors leave us alone’, ‘We don’t want APC in Rivers State’, and ‘Wole Soyinka is no longer learned’. Some youths loyal to Amaechi later stormed the area and engaged the protesters in a free-for-all fight. “I saw what happened from the beginning,” said an airport official who did not want his name published. “Though the pro-Amaechi youths were not as many as the GDI people, they were also plenty of them. They went there to attack the governors because they had started pelting their cars with missiles. If not for those other ones, it would have been bloody.”
