PSA/FYI The Muslim name BEY did not nor is it owned by the Moorish Science Temple of America, they merely adopted its use and popularized it in the the west, well after the name lost its significance on the worldwide Political scene. The name originates during the Ottoman Empire , the founder of that Empire was Osman(which is the Turkish dialectic spelling of the Arab name Uthman who was the 3rd Khalifah after Prophet Mohammed) Bey. Osman Bey was a Tribal Chief/Leader of the Turks at the time. The name means Chief or Leader, equivalent to the use of the word Lord or Duke among the Europeans in England, France , etc... It was a title name given to Sultans and Governors of Provinces , basically one rank below Pasha among the Ottomans. This Title was held all over the Ottoman empire regardless of Ethnicity or region, even down into Africa as far as Nigeria. Bey was also the title that was awarded by the Sultan of Turkey in the twilight of the Ottoman empire to Oloye Mohammed Shitta, an African merchant prince of the Yoruba people who served as a ranking leader of the Muslim community in the kingdom of Lagos. Subsequently, he and his children became known in Nigeria by the compound name Shitta-Bey, a tradition which has survived to the present day through their lineal descendants.
