PSA for small business owners: There seems to be a new scam floating around, specifically in tattoo shops. The client (AKA: Shitbag) stops in, gets something tattooed, or pierced (For under $100) and goes to pay with a credit card. Either the card will be denied, or the names dont match (IE; Its my moms card)... Regardless, DO NOT LET THEM GO TO THE ATM! We keep IDs/Phone numbers/addresses on file (On our release forms), and figured this would be enough incentive for them to go get the cash, and return: Nope. According to the cops, once you let them leave, youve entered into a contract with them to pay you back, and its not a criminal matter. (IE; Youd have to take them to court... costing you more than what was stolen.) So your only option: Tell them to call a friend, and bring the money to the shop. If they leave, tell them its shop-lifing, and youll be pressing charges if they walk out the door. (The cops WILL follow up on that.) We got burned twice with this one in the past month, and I dont want to see it happen to you too. Since its never happened to me (In the past 15 years) I figure it might be a new thing started.
