He is also the author of a book of essays, Coin of the Realm: Essays on the Art and Life of Poetry (2004), and a translation of Sophocless Philoctetes (2003). He is a Professor of African and Afro-American Studies and Creative Writing at Washington University in St. Louis. Smith, Jean Valentine, Anne Waldman, and Kevin Young, and novelist Colm Tóibín will gather at Cooper Union for a public tribute to the beloved and world-renowned poet Seamus Heaney, who passed away on August 30, 2013, at the age of 74. Her translations of the Serbian poet Zvonko Karanović received a PEN American Center/NYSCA grant, and co-edited The Day Lady Gaga Died: an Anthology of NYC Poetry of the 21st Century (in Serbian, Peti talas/The Fifth Wave, 2011). Ann Lauterbach is the author of several poetry collections, including Under the Sign (Penguin, 2013); Or to Begin Again (2009), which was nominated for the National Book Award; Hum (2005); and If in Time: Selected Poems 1975–2000 (2001). She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York State Foundation for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the MacArthur Fellowship. She is currently Schwab Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard College, where she has been co-chair of writing in the Milton Avery School of the Arts since 1991. Admission is free. His honors include a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has taught at several universities and served as the Briggs-Copeland Lecturer in Poetry at Harvard. He currently teaches at the University of San Francisco.
