PSALMS OF ASCENT (PSALMS 120-134): PSALMS TO REVIVE OUR SOULS Please read Psalm 126 Christians have not always known what to do with laughter. And to be honest, there is a widespread impression that the children of God are a quite joyless and somber bunch. But the Christian life does embrace laughter and joy, though in its own peculiar way. Psalm 126 recalls God’s past actions of restoration and the emotions of joy and celebration that accompanied these saving moments. Whether it was the restoration of Sarah and Abraham, or the restoration of Joseph to his brothers, or the restoration of an exiled people back to the Promised Land, the psalmist has many restorations in mind that bring joy and laughter. The psalmist is reminded of this joy even as the life in front of him was never certain. We, also, never know when the joy and fullness of life will be interrupted by weeping and tears. All of us are in constant need of God’s continuing restoration that turn tears into rejoicing. The tears Jesus sowed in the sorrow of his passion for us and the shouts of triumph and joy of Easter, remind us of the angelic joy over sinful ones, like us, who come home to the restoration given to prodigal children everywhere. God’s promise of forgiveness turns the pain of our sin into a giant belly laugh. To be a person of faith is to learn to laugh because of God’s never-ending restoration of our lives through Jesus. How can we keep from laughing? Prayer: Dear Lord, help us begin this day laughing and return to our homes tonight with gladness in our hearts, through the restoration given by your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
