PSC Moves To Decentralise Police The Police Service Commission (PSC) has disclosed plans to decentralise the Nigeria Police by deploying Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) to zonal headquarters. The DIGs, who will be replaced by Assistant Inspectors-General of Police at the Force headquarters, would be empowered to deploy, discipline and promote officers and men as they affect their zonal commands, even as the Police Mobile Force (PMF) would also be under the DIGs for operational purposes. Chairman of the commission, Sir Mike Okiro, a former Inspector General of Police made this known at a press conference, Monday, in Abuja, to mark his 100 days in office. Okiro stated that he had forwarded a recommendation on this to The Presidency for approval and expressed confidence that the new arrangement would produce desired results. According to him, the decentralisation plan was based on the recommendation of the 2006 Presidential Committee on Police Reform under the chairmanship of Alhaji Muhammed Danmandami who suggested 12 police zones to be headed by 12 DIGs for effective monitoring and supervision of police personnel. The commission’s chairman called for a volunteer youth force to complement the efforts of security agencies to combat terrorism in the country, instead of leaving only security operatives to contend with the challenge pointing out that the civil security force had worked well in Britain, Ireland, Belgium, United States, Sri Lanka and a host of other countries.
