PSD The Pontiac Board of Education will kick off the new school - TopicsExpress

PSD The Pontiac Board of Education will kick off the new school year in a closed meeting regarding negotiations of a consent agreement with the state and pending litigation. The closed meeting on a written opinion from the district’s attorney is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, from which the board will come back to an open meeting afterward. Trustees voted to enter a consent agreement with the state to maintain some local control over operations after Gov. Rick Snyder confirmed the district is in financial emergency and needs state intervention. The board preferred the option of negotiating an agreement of how the deficit-ridden district will operate within its budget over the other three choices: emergency manager, bankruptcy or mediation with vendors. The district has 30 days from the Aug. 19 vote — or less if Treasurer Andy Dillon says it will be less than 30 days — to negotiate a consent agreement with the state Treasury and the Department of Education. The agreement must then be approved by the full board. If the agreement is breached, the state will have the option of putting the district in receivership and installing an emergency manager or requiring the district to negotiate with its vendors to make a deal on debt. The board will also hold its regular 5:30 p.m. open meeting, during which curriculum goals for the 2013-14 school year will be a main topic.
