PSL trio, Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and University of Pretoria will battle it out in this season’s Gauteng Cup on July 21st. The second annual Gauteng Football Cup was launched on Wednesday morning at the PSL’s headquarters in Parktown, where it was revealed that the defending champions, Chiefs, will face the winners of the tie between Celtic and Tuks in the final. The three team competition will see the pre-season tournament host only one semi-final, with a place in the final against Chiefs at stake. Last year it was a four team tournament, however the 2013 format has changed to three teams with the defending champions getting a bye at the semi-final stage. The tournament will be played at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on July 21. The Gauteng NEC for Sports Lebogang Mayile said that they are happy to keep hosting the tournament in Gauteng. He said that they hope to see more teams compete in such tournaments. “What is important for us as Gauteng provincial government is to continue supporting our teams in their development. We hope to see the tournament grow every year. We have three good teams this season and we will see a great tournament this year,” Mayile said. Stuart Baxter, Clinton Larsen and Steve Barker will be keen to use the Gauteng Cup as a way of preparing for their 2013/14 campaign, hoping to get off to a good start against their PSL rivals. Tickets for the tournament will be sold for R35 by Computicket. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will clash on July 27, with the title of 2013 Carling Black Label Cup champions up for grabs.
