PTA MEETING 1.16.14 Board Members Present: Kristen Zarcadoolas, Tameka Johnson, Jennifer Palmer, Leonora Murphy, Ela Jaynes Handouts available: Meeting agenda, Treasurer Report, 3 Gala handouts Jennifer Palmer: GALA -Hands out 2 letters and Donation Contract -Explains new Gala details, (this year includes dinner, drink ticket and cash bar -Explains how to buy tickets online -Ticket prices ($50 each, 2/$90) -The PTA will be using a new system to checkout the winning items at the gala, this should help ease the end of the evening transactions and smooth check out. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GALA! 1. PHOTO BOOTH PHOTOGRAPHER to man the photo booth and take pictures. (All props, supplies and equipment will be provided. Just need to bring your camera.) 2. MC (Master of Ceremonies) to preside over closing of the tables and the live auctions. Kristen: PS 132 Parent, Logan Hicks will do the Art Auction online again this year (via Ebay Giving Works- an auction on Ebay specifically for non-for-profit groups) Teachers’ Corner- Ms. Guinness: Looking for a PHOTOGRAPHER VOLUNTEER! 5th grade class historically makes a slide show retrospective DVD. Please consider volunteering to help by taking photographs of class events and helping Ms. Guinness edit them onto an iMovie dvd for the Senior Class. Kristen: Introduces new PTA Treasurer, Leonora Murphy Treasurer Report Disusses Treasurer Report hand out Ms. Korotz, Administration: Discusses upcoming DOE Quality Review of PS 132. The last time the school was reviewed was 4 years ago. We received a “Developing Well” standard. It is a comprehensive review of students files, teachers files, administration operations and some parent input. Q: Parent, Sarah Porter: How does the Quality Review align with the Progress Report the school receives each year? Answer: Ms. Korotz: It is not the same thing, but it helps our overall reputation as the score is presented in the description of our school along with other stats from the Progress Report. Ms. Korotz: The school has received a grant for an after school arts program. The grant only allows for 40 children, and the selection will be held through a lottery. The program is open to grades 1-5 and will be two after-school days a week for 12 weeks. The program, is arts based, and the students will be working on mural projects. The group will be split into a lower grade and upper grade group taught by Ms. DeKoning and Ms.Beury. Kristen: School Picture RETAKE DAY is Tuesday, Jan 21st Parent, Charlotte Ghiorse: Presents the intentions and role of the newly forming GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE (GRC) as a platform acting as a liaison to bring parents’ concerns or issues to the administration’s attention. These would be issues that are not PTA related. Recent topic for example is dismissal procedures GRC will provide contact information as soon Q: Parent, Sarah Porter Please explain what is being taught in my son’s class period, titled “Enrichment Cluster” A: Ms. Korotz This enrichment cluster is currently taught by Ms. Mizullo in grades K-5 and covers projects that are literary based. Recently included -Everyone Cooks Rice celebration -District wide essay contest -Upcoming: Chinese New Year A parent expresses concern that there is fundraising within certain classrooms. Discussion ensues about its legality vs. what is fair or socially responsible. Meeting Closed
