PTSD AND FAMILY "OUTINGS".... I think most of us who are dealing - TopicsExpress

PTSD AND FAMILY "OUTINGS".... I think most of us who are dealing with PTSD in the home have come to realize that “family outings”, or even going out as a couple can be a real challenge. Because of the Vet’s tendency to isolate, their problems with being in crowded places, and the increased possibility of triggers, in addition to other PTSD symptoms…. It can sometimes feel like a miracle to me that we EVER do anything away from our home. Life has definitely dramatically changed. In our home, we have found a couple of things that do help us a little with getting out that I thought I’d share…. We have learned that if we are going to try to go to a restaurant (RARE), we will need to choose a quieter time/day of the week, and a quieter, less “trendy” place. Also, my husband (the Vet) will need to choose his seat first, so he can have the most “mental comfort” possible (view of, and proximity to doors/exits and such). I should mention here that all these things just make it POSSIBLE for him to go out with us sometimes, but it’s still not the most “enjoyable” experience, because his added tension throughout the meal is very noticeable. I just try to be grateful that he is at least trying, and pushes himself, so that he can be with us, and then I meet him part way by respecting that he has legitimate limitations, so I don’t ask him to do this terribly often. We have also had to learn that my hubby is usually more willing to do a “family outing” if we are going to be outdoors in a less crowded area (like a park or the woods). This can work out better than enclosed spaces. And the last thing I can offer on this is that I have had to learn that if my Vet tells me “it’s time to go”, because he’s triggered or very overwhelmed, then I need to help facilitate that as quickly and quietly as possible…. If he is actually TELLING me he has to go, then he probably really needed to leave awhile ago, but didn’t want to say anything to ruin OUR experience, so now it’s REALLY time. If others of you out there have found things that help you out with “outings”, and can relate, maybe you could share what has helped you all too. ~~Michele Smith. Thanks to Military with PTSD
