PUBLIC HEALTH INTERNSHIP-FAMILY WELLNESS PROGRAM Mission/Vision of the Organization: The YWCA of Miami-Dade, Inc. is a non-profit organization who provides opportunities to all races of women, girls, and their families to enhance their personal growth, leadership, education, health, and empowerment. The focus of the organization is towards the elimination of injustice and prejudice wherever they exist in our community. Its mission is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Program Overview: A comprehensive breast and cervical cancer program that assists minority medically underserved women in receiving free or low-cost breast and cervical screenings. The program offers support services such as referral assistance for treatment and Support Groups. The YWCA Family Wellness Program (YWCA FWP) provides breast and cervical health education in various settings throughout Miami-Dade County. Education is provided in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish at health fairs, via community outreach, and through group and one-on-one education sessions. Women are taught proper Breast Self Assessment methods; provided with information about breast and cervical screening recommendations; information about resources for women to access low or no-cost breast & cervical screening services is also provided. FWP also houses a childhood obesity project in collaboration with Health in the Hood, aims to increase fruits & vegetable consumption, physical activity, and knowledge about nutrition. Youth enrolled in the program participate in the nutritional classes, physical group activities, and the construction and maintenance of an on-site urban garden. INTERNSHIP SUMMARY • Responsible to conduct outreach activities and health education sessions with women in designated communities on breast and cervical health and other chronic diseases in a culturally appropriate manner. • Responsible for assisting with the childhood obesity project as needed. • Students interning with the YWCA FWP will also participate in the YWCA Worksite Wellness Program by assisting the Worksite Wellness Committee. • Students will also be instrumental in grant-writing process by providing support to the grant-writing team. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Coordinate and conduct outreach and health education activities in designated communities • Maintains record of educational activities through sign-in sheets and database • Complete pre- and post-test surveys • Prepare monthly health awareness bulletin boards • Assist with, and participate in monthly Worksite Wellness meeting • Assist with coordination and implementation of Worksite Wellness activities • Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education: This position requires good computer skills, good oral and writing skills, must be able to successfully work on projects independently; Bilingual skills in Spanish and/or Creole a plus; Background and knowledge of women’s health issues, nutrition and other chronic diseases preferred. The individual must be flexible, show initiative, and work independently as well as part of a team. Minimum Job Requirements: Working on at least a Bachelors Degree in Public Health or related field; Masters level students preferred. Ability to write and organize reports and data; do telephone intake for clients, and support grant writing with stats & research. Must be able to meet Florida level 2 background screening requirements. Duration: Internship available for Spring, Summer and Fall 2014 Hours: Approx. 20-25 hrs/week, about 4-5 hrs/day (some weekend & evening presentations a must) This is an unpaid internship; it will provide practical, hands-on experience in program coordination and implementation both at the community and worksite wellness level. It will be an opportunity to see the wide range of issues in the Public Health field.
