***********PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING***************** Enterovirus 68 is reaching epidemic proportions in our area. Dont assume a cold is just a cold.... Drink plenty of fluids...get plenty of rest... Load up on vitamin C.... Wash your hands (with soap) often....change your towels & bed linens...and disinfect!! The same recommendations apply to the upcoming flu season! If you or your child already has asthma or autoimmune disorders you are at a higher risk of complications. A virus targeting children is spreading rapidly in Oklahoma. In August 150 children were diagnosed with Rhinovirus or Enterovirus. Oklahoma is one of several states asking the CDC for help diagnosing the rare infection known as Enterovirus 68. Per the Oklahoma State Health Department, it is a virus with no specific treatment, antibiotics will not help and there are no antiviral treatments. At least 1 school in Oklahoma has closed because of the virus and officials worry more will close as well. Initial symptoms look like those of a cold or asthma attack, even for children who do not have asthma. If it progresses, breathing rate increases, crackles or wheezes are noted. If the child is experiencing more difficulty moving air, don’t delay seeking medical attention. Children 5 and under and those with asthma or other respiratory issues are the hardest hit. The Oklahoma State Health Department expects the virus to spread to most of the country during the next few weeks. This PSA was sent from Midwest EMS.
