PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Folks, I just deleted all the comments by one Mr. Miner from a recent, 250-comment thread on my wall. This is the first time I have deleted and blocked a commenter in recent memory. I pride myself on virtually never blocking or moderating my commenters. I realize this is a policy that comes at a cost -- some readers dont want to comment on my wall, for fear of getting into an unwanted confrontation with unpleasant folks. However, for better or for worse, Ive tended to place great value on maintaining a largely unmoderated space. I made an exception in this instance because it came to my attention that multiple readers were reaching unwarranted conclusions about the topic of the earlier post, thanks to the volume and vitriol of Mr. Miners comments. Yes, LGBT-focused discussions and events are unusual, even sometimes controversial, in the Mormon world, but they arent THAT controversial. Mr. Miners contributions were leading some to believe there is massive, openly-bigoted and viciously-homophobic resistance to our outreach in the Seattle North stake that is exploding all over the place locally. But this simply isnt true. Sure, theres inevitably going to be some of that, but Mr. Miners views and rhetoric were extreme, unrepresentative of mainstream LDS conservatives who might be wary of any LGBT-themed discussions and efforts. So as not to unintentionally perpetuate the idea that the present LDS landscape in Seattle is much more homophobic than it is, I handed Mr. Miner his hat and gently kicked him to the curb. Have a nice evening.
