PUFAs and WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID THEM At this point, you are probably hip to the fact that fat is actually good for you, but not all fats. Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) as the name suggests are a type of Unsaturated Fat (as opposed to saturated fat). The problem with Unsaturated fats is that they are extremely unstable. Whether during processing or in your body these fats can effectively go rancid which paves the way for free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to the cells in our body. Cellular damage leads to numerous issues: PUFAs can: 1. Cause inflammation 2. Impair digestion 3. Slow the thyroid (i.e. your metabolism) 4. Cause hormonal imbalances (excess estrogen) 5. Weaken the immune system. 5. Accelerated aging and skin issues. Common PUFAs - To be Avoided at all costs. Soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, canola, sesame oil, sunflower seed oil, palm oil, vegetable oils and yes even fish oil. What oils/fats should you use? Primarily Saturated Fats as they are extremely stable and basically do the exact opposite as PUFAs, meaning they reduce inflammation, support optimal hormonal balance, strengthen your immune system, support digestion and slow aging. Use the following Saturated Fats on a regular basis: 1. Coconut Oil 2. Olive Oil (unsaturated, but not a PUFA) 3. Butter 4. Ghee 5. Animal Fats (Tallow, Lard, Suet)
