PUNJAB GOVT COLLEGES’ SMART CLASS PROPOSAL GETS CM NOD Thursday, 14 August 2014 | PNS | Chandigarh The Punjab Government colleges are all set to go smart. Aiming at imparting quality higher education to the students, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has put a stamp of approval on the proposal of setting up ‘smart classes’ in all Government colleges across the State. The decisions aiming at improving the education standards in the State was taken during the Chief Minister’s meeting with the officers of Higher Education department on late Tuesday evening. Badal, taking part in deliberations, underscored the need for upgrading and strengthening the Higher education sector in the State. “These smart classes must be established in all Government colleges across the State to equip students with high-end technologies,” he added. He said that this project would house ultramodern libraries and laboratories in these colleges, to enormously benefit the students. He also approved the allocation of Rs five lakh each to all Government colleges under this project. In another significant decision, the Chief Minister also approved opening of ‘Finishing Schools’ for imparting vocational and skill training to the students in hospitality, airlines, sales and marketing, IT and networking and retail sectors. These schools would come up in the Government colleges of Hoshiarpur, Tanda Urmur, Mansa, Bathinda, Tarn Taran, Jagroan, Patiala, Faridkot, Sunam, Gurdaspur, Ajnala, Dhudike, besides Ludhiana’s SCD College and Government College for Women. Emphasising on the adoption of holistic approach to update communication, inter personal, technical, essential employability and aptitude and problem solving skill of the students so that they could excel in future, Badal said that the state government would spend Rs 38 lakh for setting of these schools in 14 colleges selected in the first phase. “The remaining colleges would be covered in subsequent phases….It is need of the hour to acquaint students with emerging trends in this sector so that they could be gainfully employed,” he added. To promote sports and relatively new discipline of aeronautical engineering in the state, Badal also approved setting up of Sports College at Jalandhar and Punjab Aeronautical Engineering College at Patiala. He also approved allocation of Rs 26 crore — Rs 13 crore for each college — to set up these colleges. Similarly, to promote education in Educational Backward Districts (EBDs) of Ferozepur and Pathankot, Badal also approved setting up of two Model Degree Colleges in these districts.
