PUP statement on attack at Twaddell. The Progressive Unionist Party has strongly condemned a republican blast bomb attack carried out while PSNI officers monitored a white line protest by members of the Orange Order against the Parades Commission. Winston Irvine said, "This was a disgusting and violent attack that could have killed. This is a clear escalation of republican aggression which is designed to increase tensions around parading. Last year we had machine gun fire by republicans and now we have blast bombs, yet the Parades Commission has ruled in their favour." Winston continued, "The people behind this reckless attempt to murder members of the public today are the same people that the Parades Commission are pandering to. Where is the logic in this? Peaceful marchers are penalised while those who try to maim and kill are rewarded for their actions. This demonstrates further the injustice and bias of the Parades Commission." He concluded, "Rather than dealing with where the problem lies - Republican aggression and its intolerance of Protestant heritage - the Parades Commission has decided to punish the unionist community because of the threat of Republican violence. Both Parades Commission decisions and violent attacks by Republicans only serve to strengthen the resolve of the Protestant community." Winston concluded, "We would urge the community to show restraint in the face of this blatant and dangerous provocation by Republicans and their supporters."
