PUT SOLAR PANELS WHERE WE USE THE POWER -- Rooftops & Parking lots! We continue to learn about the destructive impact of building large solar power plants in the remote desert. At least 20 water birds - including great blue herons, brown pelicans, and an endangered Yuma clapper rail - have been found dead at two solar projects near Joshua Tree National Park since March. The birds probably were attracted to the projects from far away because the gleaming mirrors appear to them as a lake. This appearance is caused by the reflection of thousands of gleaming mirrors in the sun, known as "lake effect."
