PWA VOLUNTEERS REMOVE A TRAILER-LOAD OF TRASH FROM THE PEMAQUID COAST The Pemaquid Point area is now a bit lighter in litter thanks to 14 hardworking volunteers organized by the Pemaquid Watershed Association (PWA) as part of Coastweek, a national celebration of our coastal resources. Among the debris collected on the breezy, sunny morning of September 20 were approximately 65 cans of varied sorts, 21 plastic dispenser bottles, 61 pieces of foam, 85 lobster trap remnants, 45 yards of rope fragments, and over 400 cigarette butts. Overall, an estimated 200 pounds of trash was removed from the shore and roadways around Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Park. PWA thanks the wonderful volunteers who spent their Saturday morning working to keep our local environment beautiful: Tricia Bannon, Billy and Bunny Claflin, Nancy Dickinson, Chris and Lynne Gilbert, Sarah Highlund, Franklin and Joanna Holland, Pam Joy, Mike and Debby Kane, and Roger and Joan Panek. The volunteers not only collected the trash, they then tallied the debris items so that PWA could compile the data into a report for The Ocean Conservancy to help pinpoint the sources of marine debris and devise solutions to reduce the amount of debris. PWA also is grateful to the Bristol Parks and Recreation Commission for providing the trailer and transporting the litter to the transfer station. Pemaquid Watershed Association is a volunteer-based, membership-supported non-profit organization with a mission to conserve the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula through land and water stewardship and education. PWA has been leading coastal cleanups for over 20 years. Organizing cleanups and educating about pollution prevention is just one of the many ways PWA serves to protect the environment; to learn more, visit pemaquidwatershed.org.
