Pa. district adopts pictorial-based math curriculum for young students To implement the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards, educators in the Great Valley School District in Malvern, Pa., have decided to use Math in Focus in its elementary schools. The program uses concrete elements, such as pictures and blocks, to introduce young students to math concepts before moving to abstract concepts, explained Tricia Beck, elementary supervisor of teaching and learning. She added: "Students will use pictures to understand the why and the how behind the math.
