Packing to leave New York back home to Denmark - a place that I thought was one of the few places to protect their strong history of music making, of fantastic orchestras, of the wonderful musicians that play in those orchestras. But waking up this morning I was told of the horrific news that due to cuts the Danish National Chamber Orchestra will no longer exist from January 2015. I am in total shock. (For my non-danish friends - this is orchestra with 75 years of history, an orchestra with a unique atmosphere of dear friends that give all their whole soul and life to this orchestra - and produce some of the best concerts Ive witnessed in my lifetime - especially under the baton of Adam Fischer. Danish National Chamber Orchestra have one of the most innovative programming for any orchestra of that size I ever saw, with performances ranging from symphony concerts, pops, national TV shows, touring shows, etc...). I find it unbelievable how one day we can be sitting celebrating the appointment of conductor Fabio Luisi to the symphony orchestra, with Denmark being put up on the world media, congratulated for such initiative and their support to the arts - then almost the next day the coffers seem to be empty and a great orchestra is cut. What the hell is going on in the budget department. How is it possible to get one of the worlds greatest conductors to the brother orchestra, the symphony, and then cut the sister orchestra, the chamber orchestra because of lack of budget? My heart goes out to all the workers and musicians that have had this shocking and tragic news today and I urge the ones responsible to re-consider this decision. We are not going to let this happen in Denmark without a fight.
