Pacquiao preparing for backup fights if Mayweather backs out By Brandon Wise / CBSSports January 25, 2015 04:09 PM ET With Manny Pacquiaos deadline for Floyd Mayweather to agree to the fight quickly nearing, Pacquiao is already lining up potential backup fights, according to promoter Bob Arum. Pacquiao will likely fight on May 30 if Mayweather doesnt sign on for the May 2 fight, Arum said to ESPN. A lot of places around the world want to host a Manny Pacquiao fight, Arum said. Hes an international icon, and I have been approached by a number of people looking to host a Manny Pacquiao fight. The leading candidate to take on Pacquiao is Amir Khan, who has a career record of 30-3 with 19 knockouts. Arum said other possible opponents for Pacquiao are Russian brawler and former junior welterweight titlist Ruslan Provodnikov and junior welterweight slugger Lucas Matthysse of Argentina. Prince Harry has a group looking to put on a Manny Pacquiao fight in London, Arum said. Khan would certainly make sense, and its an interesting fight. But remember -- all that is a backup plan. We are still trying to nail down the Mayweather fight. We need Mayweather to say yes. Arum is hoping to avoid this situation. Hopefully, it wont happen and we wont need this plan because Manny will be fighting Mayweather, Arum said. But you have to plan ahead.
