Paddingtons Label A little bit of background for you on Paddingtons very distinctive look: -author Michael Bond himself owned a blue duffle coat and old bush hat, similar to those worn by Paddington -Bond has said that both Paddington’s suitcase and the label around his neck are drawn from his own memories of children carrying suitcases and wearing labels when they were evacuated from London by train during the Second World War -in the first four days of September 1939 nearly 3,000,000 people were evacuated in Britain -they moved from the towns and cities to safer places in the countryside; the vast majority of those evacuated were schoolchildren, but they were accompanied by 100,000 teachers and sometimes a parent. These photos are from BBC Radio. Note the label that each child is wearing.
