Paddling at Falling Creek has included a long tradition of excellence from the very first years. From the beginning, we gained strong mentors and leaders for the program from the rich heritage of experienced paddlers/instructors and top-notch rivers in the area. Falling Creek continues to require all first time boaters to qualify in tandem canoe. The partners work together to paddle on the lake first, learning strokes and passing tests like the buoy course. Then, its off to the Lower Green River, then the Tuckaseegee and finally the Nantahala River. As the final test at this level, they will catch the truck stop eddy and then successfully navigate the rest of the famous Nantahala Falls rapid. This earns the boys their yaklet and now the chance to start over in a closed boat. Kayaks are the primary choice at this point and they will work through a myriad of river options ultimately paddling the Chatooga, Ocoee, Nolichucky, New, and the top guys make it on to the Gauley and lower portion of the Green Narrows. For 6 summers now, we have offered 10-day Expeditions during the 2-week camp to those interested in taking it to the next level. Last year, one group experienced the Southeastern US and the other went to Costa Rica. This summer one group will paddle on the Ottawa and the other on the Magpie fallingcreek/programs/expedition-trips/huck-magpie in Canada. Cheers to whitewater paddling at Falling Creek Camp!
