BY JENNIFER SOLIS CORRESPONDENT ……...Town Administrator Tracy Blais announced Newbury was awarded $145,000 to support a dune restoration project and dune vulnerability and sustainability assessment on Plum Island from Centre Island north to the Newburyport line. A group of professors from the University of New Hampshire is leading the project, which employs a community-based approach aimed at empowering property owners to take action to strengthen the dunes and protect their property. High Road resident John Harwood, of Storm Surge, spoke briefly to selectmen about this group of concerned citizens formed in 2013. Storm Surge is dedicated to helping with community preparedness in the face of rising sea levels, extreme weather and other impacts of climate change. The group’s target communities include: Amesbury, Ipswich, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury, and West Newbury. For more information visit storm-surge.org. In a letter included in the press packet for the meeting, Keith Eddings indicated he wished to speak with selectmen about a town parking policy for Plum Island that he feels prohibits visitors to the island “from parking past the 30-minute dine and dash that Newbury allows.” Eddings said that the policy winds up “effectively banning out-of- towners from Newbury beaches while accepting millions of dollars in state and federal aid to fortify its beaches and dunes and the million-dollar homes that it has allowed to be built on them.”
