Paigntons tigeriffic new arrival. Carnivore keepers at Paignton Zoo are celebrating the arrival of a female Sumatran tiger. The new addition, named Shakira, traveled to the park from Berlin Tierpark and joins resident male, Tenang. At Paignton, Shakira replaces twelve-year-old female Banda who has since been relocated to Nesles Zoo in France. Paignton Zoo Curator of Mammals and Director of Operations, Neil Bemment, said: We are sorry to see Banda go, but the prospect of a new pairing and hopefully some more cubs is very exciting. Paignton Zoo is a member of the European Endangered species Programme (EEP) for Sumatran tigers, which means it is part of the global effort to save this endangered species from extinction. Captive and wild populations are protected and managed in an attempt to prevent Sumatran tigers following the Bali and Javan tigers into extinction. It is estimated that there are only around three-hundred Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching, particularly to meet the demands of the traditional Chinese medicine market. As a result, the Sumatran tiger is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park | 21st Century Tiger Photo credit: Miriam Haas.
