Paine College faculty members ask for board chairman’s resignation William Lawless, a 31-year mathematics professor, said he made the request on behalf of the faculty and will ask for Norman’s resignation and Sullivan’s reinstatement again at a Board of Trustees meeting Friday morning. Lawless said Thursday’s called faculty meeting was a question-and-answer session put on by Norman and a handful of other Board of Trustees members he could not identify. The faculty meeting was followed by one for students, Lawless said. He said Norman did not respond to the request for his resignation, but that faculty members enthusiastically applauded after it was made. “I told him we had every confidence in Samuel Sullivan, that Sullivan was a good man, an honest man and that he was very respected in the community,” Lawless said. “I told (Norman) I understood he was a graduate from Paine College, and I had no idea what his internal motivations or intentions were, but that after the events of this week that I had lost confidence in him.” Sullivan’s removal earlier this week was the latest upheaval at Paine, which is struggling to maintain its accreditation after years of financial and managerial instability.
