Painting Stones Under Water & Painting Polished Stones - ‘Problem Solvers in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’ ‘Painting Problem Solvers by Paul Taggart’ is a series based entirely on problems posted by visitors to Paul Taggart’s official websites, various on-line tutorials and the Art Workshop With Paul Taggart Painting Companions community. The two original questions resolved in this tutorial were posted by BeanKitty Studio and by David (in Canada) via Paul Taggart’s official website and read as follows:- “Hi Paul, Yey!! finally someone to ask about my latest personal acrylics challenge, painting rocks underwater. Do you have a certain way that you paint rocks or anything really, in clear water? I still do not think Ive got it down yet and I would LOVE some advice on any process you use to accomplish this? Thanks!” “Hi Paul, I am a retired Scotsman from Fife living in Canada. I took up painting when I retired and it is now my passion to learn the art of acrylic and watercolours. I am trying to paint polished sea shore rocks in acrylics using the glazing method, with no success – can you supply a tip please and thanks in advance, David”. This Problem Solver is intended as a tutorial exercise in which you will concentrate on the technique for achieving the structure and form of the stones along with their characteristics; whether wet or dry, fully submerged or partially submerged, rounded or irregularly shaped. Paul recommends that you try these out several times, each time concentrating on one particular aspect of technique – in this way you will not put pressure on yourself to achieve the same result as Paul. In this way you will also come to understand more about each technique; techniques such as working wet-on-wet, losing edges and strokes to create volume and form, surface colour mixing and colour temperature effects, working with scuffed strokes to achieve texture and more, all of which you will easily identify in this tutorial. THE FIRST PROBLEM IS RESOLVED by Paul using a simple rock pool as the basis of his demonstration, to show the different nature of rocks above the water line and those submerged under the water. Paul works with watercolour techniques that can be equally applied to painting in acrylics, using fluid colour mixes as Paul does in this demonstration. IN THE SECOND PROBLEM RESOLVED by Paul, you can follow along as he works on a cluster of three stones, using a variety of different techniques on each stone. Firstly he shows how to achieve volume and depth in setting the structure of the stones. Then he gives each stone a different characteristic through the use of simple colour mixes. Finally, he brings out the ‘polished’ nature of each stone through the use of glazes and then highlights. As with all of Paul’s tutorials, this Problem Solver is packed full of handy hints and is filmed in real-time so that you can see every stroke, every colour mixed on the palette and every technique; all accompanied by Paul’s running commentary throughout. I believe that anyone can learn to paint or draw providing they are given as much guidance as possible and shown the techniques with which to develop. My tuition is based on sharing knowledge and passing on techniques without which I would never have been able to develop as a Professional Artist and Author. I do hope that these ‘Problem Solvers’ do just that - help you to enjoy painting. Let this Artist and Author of fourteen books and Presenter of a growing index of over three hundred tutorial videos show you how to expand your horizons.
