Friends can be everywhere these days, at corner shops humming the latest gossip or smoking in alleyways where graffiti is still intact. Late afternoon, a flock of schoolboys descend on the avenue with undone shoelaces and a bruised football, roads ballooning with their frenzied cries. From our apartment windows the commotion is refreshing, nothing for the ones who simply observe to take or return. Summer, almost virgin in its complacency, works beside us, inhaling dust from empty streets, no signs or omens etched in colourless sky. We stick our heads out the window, ready to watch light depart from the streets in our eyes.
